I personally have a grim reaper tattooed on my shoulder. I got it in a dark time in my life as my mother and father had kicked me out because I had taken my car and was in a bad accident. I got the tattoo not as a negative part in my life but as a new beginning. I got it almost a year ago and everyone that sees it asks what it means, so I tell them that if it wasn't for me getting in that car accident I wouldn't be as happy as I am I wouldn't be in the military and I might have still hated myself so this tattoo means a new start to me.

Thanks for the comment Raymond. Yes, I'm with you.

37 Grim Reaper Tattoos With Dark and Mysterious Meanings

Love that classic black ink reaper. Saw one the other day done in traditional black but with flames in bright orange, red and yellow. The flames were in the background, great detail on the face, probably one of the best colored grim reaper tattoos I've ever seen. Raymond, be sure to drop back by when you get it, share it with us. Best to you..

Great format on the reaper. I have always loved skulls and the color black. I agree and associate with the different ways one could relate to the reaper. Ron, thanks for dropping by. Great way of pointing that out. So many people view tattoos in a negative way. I try to teach others that there is a art and meaning behind many tattoos. Just have to be open about it. Services4all, appreciate your time and comment.

Glad you found it interesting. Best wishes. Stars, thanks again for taking the time to stop by. It is greatly appreciated. Take care. I sincerely appreciate your time and thanks for reading. This is a design that I almost got once. I don't know why but I am drawn into the reaper design. I just think it is cool. What can I say. Oh my lyric, this ones wicked bad. The artistry's amazing and maybe I'm just an old fuddy-duddy but can't see going through life with one of these permanently inked on.

Good info on em though. Hope you enjoyed this article. I feel the same way.

There is just something about that design that is cool looking to me. I appreciate you taking the time to come by and thanks for the comment and vote. Wow, The one with the waterfall and many skeletal faces is intriguing. Thank's for sharing I spent time in Casa Grande and had the chance to catch a few shows ever now and then.

I appreciate your time, comment, and votes friend. See you soon. I just got through reading another paranormal article of yours, "Ghostly Women". Awesome job I must say. Same here, I can see it representing life, not as much as death. I just think the design is cool I guess. Take care and catch you later. I don't think I'd fancy having the Grim Reaper grinning at me all day - and especially at night! But the attraction for these type of tatoos is obvious. I was also interested in the various meanings as well, that's very new to me.

I had always just associated the grim reaper with the usual life-death-life cycle. It makes you wonder don't it. I like them. I have always been interested in the design rather then meaning. I wouldn't mind having one of these tattoos for sure. I don't know what the Grim Reaper would be doing back there personally. Probably spends more time facedown then anything: Could be wrong of course. Some people go all out.

One would be surprised where some people choose to get tattooed. LOL they are pretty scary.. Being a horror movie fan I voted up.

There are a variety of different ways that the Grim Reaper can be portrayed as a tattoo: Most portray the Reaper in a long black robe with his famous long scythe. He can be shown holding his scythe in a variety of ways, such as in front of his body or over his shoulder. Due to the length of the robe, only certain parts of the Reaper are usually shown.

Skeleton hands are usually seen holding the long scythe. His face is usually portrayed as a skeleton skull. However, some tattoos show the Grim Reaper as "faceless. Since the Reaper represents death, it is associated with the color black. With more and more tattoo artists testing their creative sides, some Grim Reapers can be inked in vibrant colors. These types of tattoos are actually gaining popularity and allow the wearer a design that is less intimidating. While it is not uncommon for people to ink designs just for the aesthetic appeal of it, a meaningful symbolism accompanied by a design, definitely makes the tattoo worth cherishing all the more.

When it comes to inking a Grim Reaper tattoo, it would be interesting to know how versatile its symbolism could get. The following section discusses the same. Meanings and Symbolism of a Grim Reaper Tattoo. The bony fingers that point towards you, the skeletal gaze that haunts you, and the tattered cloak that seems as dark and lifeless as it possibly can; clearly, this tattoo is definitely not for those who get goose bumps when they think of this psychopomp. This tattoo is undoubtedly for those who don't see death as a fearful occurrence, but a part of the cycle of life. It is for those who understand that the Grim Reaper is simply a sentient entity that only takes our ethereal form to its rightful place.

In fact, this entity can help us remind of a lot many essential things in life. Some of them are explained in the following points, thereby highlighting the meaning of this tattoo theme. Death is a Door to Another Life. Those who view death as more of a new beginning than a mere end, would complement this design quite rightfully. Yes, contradictory to its popular symbolism, the end of life, a Grim Reaper can also signify a passage to the beginning of another life.

The belief in rebirths, reincarnations, or a different form of life after death isn't unheard of.

This tattoo, in this case, would act as a reminiscent that you would eventually meet the scythe-bearer in due time, wherein he will be the carrier of your soul to the afterlife, the ultimate place of judgment, reward, punishment, and perhaps, rebirth. Life is Temporary, Live! Most of us tend to take life as a burden, especially when we encounter pain, disappointments, and failures in life.

Most of us also end up taking a lot of life's gifts for granted. Some of us get so engrossed in building a materialistic haven, that we actually forget to experience life's true essence, which is to appreciate, love, learn, and move on. A Grim Reaper design, in this case, can help in embracing and appreciating whatever time we have on earth. It emphasizes the fact that every moment passed is a step closer to death, and so it must be lived as happily and cheerfully as possible. Remember the Departed with Honor. Skull tattoos have always been a way to remember the dead, oftentimes inked with a dear one's name.

Similarly, a Grim Reaper design can also symbolize the memory of a dear one who has now moved on to the afterlife. Additional elements such as a grave, name of the deceased, a rose, and a quote, can make the entire design look absolutely gorgeous. Nonetheless, you can also customize it furthermore based on your personal memories associated with the deceased person. Be Triumphant Over Your Fears. They say that the best way to overcome your fears is to face them. For many of us, death is perhaps the biggest fear of all.

Sporting this tattoo can somewhat help us accept the fact that fear only makes things worse and that death is as likely as birth. This tattoo is also symbolic of bravery, which is why you will find it on many marines and soldiers. These warriors tend to encounter near-death experiences in their careers almost everyday, and therefore, this tattoo is quite a remarkable way for them to portray their fearlessness towards death.

An Emotionless Mask. This entity is neither good or evil. It just does its job to harvest the souls of the departed to the afterlife. Legend has it that it is almost impossible to trick, convince, or persuade the reaper to spare your soul. It gazes at you with an emotionless stare, the darkness it wears overshadows all that it contains. In the practical and rigid world that we live today, most of us choose to wear a mask, be immune to feelings, attachments, and emotional blows of life.

We say mask because being humans, emotions inevitably form a part of our existence. Hence, this tattoo may also depict an emotional closure from the world. Obsession with Death, Evil, and Darkness. There are quite a lot of folks who are obsessed with the unknown, with death, darkness, afterlife, and the whole eeriness that these elements emit in general. Some believe these tattoos to be sported by those who worship Satan, or, who are involved in practices associated with devilish cults.
